NYYC Music Service runs a range of County Youth standard ensembles for gifted and talented musicians. These meet as residential courses and also some weekends during the year. Recent performances have taken place at Selby Abbey, Ripon Cathedral, Leeds Town Hall and Giggleswick School.   

                                                                                                                                                                            

 County Youth OrchestraCounty Youth Orchestra

County Youth Orchestra - conducted by Simon Wright. The orchestra is for players of grade 5 standard and above. The repertoire is designed to stretch players and introduce them to pieces they would not normally get to play. Recent concerts have included works by Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Butterworth, Caesar Frank, and Bruckner amongst others. The orchestra also always features a concerto by one of the pupils as well as a student composition.

 

 

                                                               County Brass Ensemble and Saxophone Ensemble - Conducted by Chris Hirst, Ian Bangay and Ralph Alder  - These are brand new ensembles aimed at pupils of Grade 6 and above. Entrance is by audition only. Pupils will learn to play in smaller chamber ensembles performing a range of challenging repertoire. They will also be able to work with the other larger ensembles where appropriate e.g. Symphony Orchestra and Big Band. The groups will aim to tour in 2018 and we will aim to create links with performing professional musicians and ensembles to enhance pupils experience.

 

 

County Wind Band - conducted by Su Evans/ Bob Butterfield

 The ensemble is aimed at students who will be a minimum Grade 3 by July 2017 providing each student with additional rehearsals to develop their musical experiences further and meet like minded musicians and make new friends from across the county.

 

 

 

County Junior Orchestra - conducted by Stephen Price. This is a new addition to the ensembles and meets on a couple of weekends a year as well as a longer summer residential. Players need to be Grade 3 and above. The orchestra recently performed at Giggleswick school to great acclaim. 

 

 

 

 

County Youth Big Band - conducted by Ralph Alder. This is a full jazz band playing a range of traditional and more recent arrangements and compositions. The big band is made up of the Brass Ensemble and Saxophone Ensemble musicians whom have auditioned. The Big Band usually tours Europe each year.

 

County Youth Choir - The County Youth Choir meets on a residential course each year. The choir has performed in a variety of venues and performed Handel's "Messiah" in York Minster with the South Bank Sinfonia live on Classic FM. The choir is for SATB and for secondary school age pupils. County Choir is conducted by Emma Calvert, Andrea Rhodes and Nigel Waugh.
